The picture above is Demi Lavoto who was featured in Seventeen magazine sharing her story about the struggles in her life..
Demi is a pop artist that reaches out to teenagers with low self esteem issues. Demi has a record of being bulimic and cutting herself. She was in rehab for almost a year trying to recover and still to this day she battles with those two diseases. Demi shapes the eye for the young viewers who have been through hard times insecurities and not loving yourself. Demi talks about positive and uplifting things. I was watching her interview on MTV and a little girl went up to her and told her that she had cancer and she wasn’t wearing her wig that night because of demi. She told Demi her music makes her feel beautiful and not wanting to wear her wig out in public. Demi was struggling that day and did not want to perform that night of her concert. When she heard the little girl’s story she was reminded that she is a positive role model on girls. That night Demi went on stage and sang her heart out. Demi leads the path for positivity and beauty. She doesn’t talk about cutting herself she talks about how girls are beautiful, being a better person and love.

Little Richard

The music industry has come a long way with sound recordings all the way up to the newest artist out. Now the majority of the stuff on the radio is Hip hop, techno and pop. Back in the 1950s it was mainly rock and roll which was slang for “sex”.  Rock and roll was the first popular music to confuse issues of sexual identity and orientation (chapter 3 ) .  The picture above is the one and only little Richie. Little Richie paved the way for some of the worlds well known rock artists of today. Little Richie would put on wigs, make-up, and flashy clothing to impress his fans. The impact he had on his generation was sexuality, little Richie was the start to men thinking it was alright to walk around with make-up and wigs on.

French printer Eduaurd- Leon Scott de Martinville was the first person to start experimenting with sound recordings. He used hog hair bristle’s as he tied one to a thin membrane that was placed over a narrow part of a funnel. When Eduaurd talked into the funnel the membrane vibrated and the end of the bristles from the brush which made grooves.  His experimenting did help the sound recording as a mass medium. (chapter3) Eduaurd was the start of the music recording and inventions that took place in the music industry. He led the way for all the producers of today’s times such as Timbaland, Scott Storch and Swizz beats.

Marylin Manson is one of the craziest heavy metal artists known to mankind. Heavy metal consists of loud drums and guitar while the singer is screaming at the top of their lungs. Marilyn’s lyrics to all his music is very dark and even scary. In his song “A long road out of hell”, he talks about how he is like the teenage Christ and how he has a date with suicide because being a teenager is so hard.  Marilyn Manson’s lyrics have an impact on people. The kids who shot up Columbine high school back in 1999 were listening to Marilyn prior to what happened. One innocent girl got shot in the head for saying she believed in Jesus. Many people blamed Marilyn for his foul lyrics in his songs of to why those boys killed and injured people. The music industry signs people and allows them to express whatever they want. I am certain that the music being made is done intentionally, it’s almost like a brain wash inside our minds. When you start to listen to a Marilyn Manson song you get angry and you feel the depression. Marilyn Manson leads the path of death and depression in his music and that’s what he wants you to feel. Marilyn wants you to see him as a crazy man who has issues and is depressed. The influence that he has on teenager’s can make them feel the same way.

Lady gaga is the hottest pop artist out today. She loves the gays and supports them all the way. Her target and who she aims for is all the lesbian and gay men out there.  Lady Gaga praises them in her concerts and tells her fans that whoever they are they were born that way. Lady Gaga is way out there but many people look at her not weird but as if she is making a statement for something.  Lady Gaga paves the way for the gays. They listen to her music and like her because she puts herself out there with no any fear of what people have to say.

Conclusion

As I stated in the intro, what we do shapes who we are.  It is very important to be careful of the songs that you listen to because, there is deeper meaning to it than just you listening to the beat. The music industry has a way with publishing music. These are only a few artists among the many that are apart of the music industry that have an affect on people and who they are. These artists work hard to be where they are but sometimes they are forced to be portrayed a certain  way so they can get more views and likes. The eye of the music industry works in a lot of ways to convince us to buy a new song or continue to listen to a certain artists. I caught myself in a down mood listening to depressing music. What I realized is that when I engaged in that kind of music it made me even more depressed. It is true that the music can affect who we are and what we do. The question is though will you continue to allow the music to control you? Or will you control what you listen to and who you genuinely are?

Hip hop and rap came about in the 1970s which was music that was combined with street talk. One of the first artists known to this new genre was Run DMC. A lot of hip hop and rap songs talk about the ghetto and loosing people in their life. Other songs talk about sex and downgrade women by calling them “bitches”. Hip Hop and rap are two genres that go together with one another. They both have catchy beats that make you want to get up and start bumping. What people don’t realize is that when you listen to a song about having sex with stripper’s it influences you to hook up with someone after the club. Above is Hip Hop’s newest and best known rapper of today is Drake his real name, Aubrey Drake Graham. Drake talks about real life stories in his songs. He talks about his mother and how he struggled to get where he is today. In some of his songs Drake can come off a little cocky, he boasts now about what he has rather than what he had. Drake always compares his songs to things in the past and how he has came a long way. Drake paves the path for the people who are motivated and are trying to be somebody. I asked my sister Rebecca for a second opinion on Drake and how he shapes the eye of many young teens today.  Her response was that once you start listening to Drake you can’t ignore the stuff that is coming out of his mouth.  I also got some more incite about how drake shapes the eye on twitter. I hash tagged his name and got so many lyrics that his fans have been tweeting. People use his music and apply it to their everyday lives and some people not even noticing.

Music can shape our moods and how we act in a situation. When something is going on people use music to tune the world out.
